Isle of Man House

Product used Brimstone ash Where Isle of Man Architect Henry Kennaugh

Henry Kennaugh, an experienced property developer on the Isle of Man, had his work cut out on this project. A substantial family home that needed repair work and a high-quality finish for the owner.

Amongst its many other parts, the project involved re-cladding as well as laying decking on a new roof garden. Henry decided to use Brimstone for the job.

Project background

Meeting the brief on this £2m project wasn’t simple. It involved stripping a 6,000 square feet swimming pool / spa extension back to its steel frame, before putting up walls, re-cladding and adding a roof garden with decking.

The big question: what timber would he use for the job?

Prior to starting the build Henry had visited Timber Expo, where he’d encountered our Brimstone thermally modified timber. He was impressed enough to realise that this would be the perfect material for this high value project.

So we supplied 6,000m of Brimstone Ash, including decking (VDEC2), cladding (VTG5a), and corner and soffit mouldings.

“Brimstone decking has proved very stable. It has stayed rigid, hasn’t moved and no joints have opened. Plus, the cladding has weathered very well since installation”

Decking without the ‘dish’

For Henry, Brimstone had many benefits. Decking using typical timber can often ‘dish’, but our thermally modified timber is much more stable than most other options. As it’s heated to very high temperatures, Brimstone stays flat and straight, and is highly resistant to rot.

Innovative solutions for a stunning finish

Alongside Brimstone, Henry chose to use an innovative deck support system from Eurotec of Germany.

As Henry explains: “The Eurotec system features plastic self-levelling feet with spacers and aluminium track to carry the decking boards, so there is nothing under the boards that can go rotten.

The Eurotec system also pulls screws to under 1mm below the surface of the decking and looks amazing”.

Long lasting looks

Henry has been delighted with his choice to use Brimstone. As he told us recently: "Brimstone decking has proved very stable. It has stayed rigid, hasn’t moved and no joints have opened. Plus, the cladding has weathered very well since installation".
